Brand new author wannabe. I have written on and off for years with about 20 wip. I hope to get a trilogy published as a YA portal fantasy. My goal is to get these finished and to be published this year.

Update History

Now posting my words for today. I may do another sprint, but don't want to forget to post. I will add another post if I get to that today.

Today, a character I thought was done with nearly 20 chapters ago wanted more screen time. It seems that his return may end tragically though I will not argue when a character seems to belong in a story.

Adding a day late. I hoped to get in a third sprint. I didn't get that in and didn't get to posting either. I had a very productive day in the short time I did write.

Got through a great dream sequence. Now (and finally) up the mountain the fellowship will go.

β€œHappy climbing!” – Rachael

The fellowship is about to go up the mountain, but first, the protagonist has another dream. This one will creep him out. Lots of good words. The characters in the village are all but finished in the stories that will be told. Almost all that remains will happen off-screen. Next, there will be a trip up a mountain that will lead us to the climax and ending.

Fun writing day.

Two injured characters. The 'unnamed' one is, of course, the one who will die. It will raise the danger level for what will follow.

β€œNice!” – Denise Schuh
β€œThat's a good session! well done.” – mwigington

I hope one more day /one more chapter and the book will run into the 'quest up the mountain'. We solved several subplots in the village before setting off. We know the characters and the main arc of the story is running along quite well. Then it will be rewriting the last two chapters (probably becoming three), and it will be time for the editing process. I am very excited!

β€œgetting the first draft done is exciting, congrats! well done I say! :)” – mwigington
β€œHooray! Well done!” – Rachael

Didn`t count 3 hours of editing in the time. The edits were needed. Now I can move forward.

Was slow today, but gave it a LOT of time. I also went down the rabbit hole of wondering what Autocrit thought of it. (I did not count that time.)

Got in a third sprint!

β€œGood work!” – mwigington
β€œSpeedy writing too!” – Rachael

Started to get to a scene that should be a surprise to the reader. I will try one more sprint tonight if I can fine time.

Lots of descriptive text. They were cutting herbs... and I wasn't aware of what they were like until we got there. Worldbuilding.

Will take a break and return to another sprint after editing.

β€œThere's something about worldbuilding, I could keep at it for hours and hours. Good work!” – mwigington

Mostly editing time. Could not sleep. Tried to write. Wrote very few words.

Moving right along.

Some comedy before they talk of death. The book just topped 60K words. I am alarmed, as I originally projected only 880K total. It appears I may end up over 100K. Does anyone have a guess how many words will be shed by the edit process with a raw new author like me?

A YA Portal fantasy with a 100K word novel seems more like a turn-off than a feature for a debut author.

β€œI can only speak to my experience writing dark mythic fantasy, which my work usually comes in at 120k to 130k then edits out to around 95k. I would think a YA portal would come in somewhere around that? Fantasy in general tends to be longer. So don't sweat it.” – mwigington
β€œDefinitely don't sweat it!” – Rachael

Lots of editing and some plotting. We have added a character to the fellowship. That will require some rewriting. Sigh.

On the other hand, some good new words were written.

wlarson wrote 487 words in 25 min on portal – Amos

Able to 'turn the page'... as in I closed up the chapter by adding to one of the subplots and bringing the main story a bit forward.

β€œWell done!” – ChapelWitch
wlarson wrote 658 words in 45 min on portal – Amos

Rereading the earlier dream sequences, I realized they were telling the character more than I thought. The plot just leveled up. The 658 words were (mostly) the next dream.

β€œSounds intriguing!” – ChapelWitch

This session was just writing. I am so much slower than all of you!

wlarson wrote 807 words in 90 min on portal – Amos

Lots of edits and 30 minutes of writing. I have taxes and laundry, but I will be back to writing later. AT least one more sprint today.

β€œKeep up the good work! 807 in 30 minutes is great!” – mwigington
wlarson wrote 365 words in 20 min on portal – Amos

I got in a third shift around chores and spending time with family. Not a lot of words, but again, good words that moved the plot. It was 1783 for the day, which, for you heavy hitters, may be a day with writer's block, but is solid for me. (Looking back, I have only beaten this for 5 days. Thinking aloud, I must sound such like a newbie.) Be well fellow writers!

β€œThat's a solid day for anyone. Good work!” – mwigington
β€œWell done!” – KABragonje
